Emulation Testbed for IEEE 802.15.4 Networked Systems

چکیده
IEEE 802.15.4 based devices are a key component for mobile and pervasive computing. However, their small dimensions and reduced resources, together with the intrinsic properties of wireless communication, make it difficult to evaluate such networked systems through realworld trials. In this paper we present an emulation testbed intended for the evaluation of IEEE 802.15.4 networked systems. The testbed builds on the generic framework of the wireless network testbed QOMB, and adds IEEE 802.15.4 network, processor and sensing emulation functionality. We validated the testbed through a series of experiments carried out both through real-world trials in a smart home environment, and through emulation experiments on our testbed. Our results show that one can accurately, and in real time, execute IEEE 802.15.4 network applications on our testbed in an emulated environment that reproduces closely the real scenario. key words: IEEE 802.15.4, wireless network emulation, processor emulation, sensor emulation, network testbed

This research statement describes the author’s PhD project, which targets the evaluation of sensor network designs in realistic environments. Network emulation includes a variety of methods and strategies for the evaluation of system designs for networked systems in safe testing environments. The author’s interest is to bridge the gap between generic simulation environments and real sensor netw...
متن کاملFlexlab: A Realistic, Controlled, and Friendly Environment for Evaluating Networked Systems
Research prototypes of networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds and emulation testbeds. Most of the strengths and weaknesses of these two types of testbeds are complementary. We outline the motivation, design, implementation, and sample results of an environment that seeks to provides the best of each type. Flexlab couples an emulation testbed with arbitrary network models. We ...

Although IEEE 802.15.4 is being considered as a promising standard for low-cost low-power Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), several issues in the specification are still open. One of those open issues is how to build a synchronized multi-hop mesh network for power efficient, scalable, and robust networking. In fact, while the current specification supports multi-hop networking using peer-to-peer...
متن کاملFinding NEMO: On the Accuracy of Inferring Location in IEEE 802.15.4 Networks
As embedded networked sensing devices become increasingly commonplace, more and more applications are being discovered, researched, and realised using them. These application domains in turn place new requirements on the capabilities of the embedded devices and associated communications technologies. By introducing a novel domain for wireless sensor devices, this paper motivates the need for ac...
متن کاملThe Flexlab Approach to Realistic Evaluation of Networked Systems
Networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds such as PlanetLab and emulation testbeds such as Emulab. Emulation testbeds give users great control over the host and network environments and offer easy reproducibility, but only artificial network conditions. Overlay testbeds provide real network conditions, but are not repeatable environments and provide less control over the experim...
